Fish Zole Forte (Metronidazole) 500mg, 60 Tablets Fish Zole Forte (Metronidazole 500mg) is for use in aquariums and is antibacterial, antiparasitic, and antiprotozoal.  Metronidazole disrupts DNA in organisms, an action that is specific for anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.  Resistance is rare.  Active against some protozoa, including Giardia organisms. Off-Label Use in Dogs & Cats:  Metronidazole is a antibacterial, antiprotozoal agent that has been used in the treatment of giardiasis, trichomoniasis, amoebiasis, balantidiasis, and trypanosomiasis.  It is as effective and is better tolerated than quinacrine for the treatment of giardiasis.  It is bactericidal to many anaerobic bacteria.  It has been used in the treatment of septicemia, meningitis, peritonitis, biliary infections, colitis, and gingivostomatitis in which anaerobic bacteria are involved.  The drug may also have immunosuppressive or immunostimulatory properties. Directions: Fish:  Add one tablet (500mg) into aquarium for each 20 gallons of water.  Repeat in 24 hours.  It is suggested that a partial water change be made between treatments.  While treatment duration depends on the type and severity of infection, it is recommended that extended baths in the medication continue for a minimum of 5 days and for not more than 10 days.  Discontinued treatment if no improvement is noted within 5 days. Dogs and Cats:  Fish Zole Forte is commonly given in off-label use to small animals.
