This has grip, concentration and a level of intensity that the Cedro does not. It coats the palate more. It shows a fair bit of oak at the moment, most of which should integrate nicely with age. Its mid-palate is still fairly elegant in weight, and it presents a relatively smooth, velvety feel, until the structural components rear their heads. The Touriga Nacional flavors asserts themselves with air, too. I liked the fact that it had a backbone. Still, the tannins are relatively ripe and the wine should be approachable relatively young. It became livelier with substantial aeration, and it needed several hours to fully awaken.

Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Madeira was aged in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional "Canteiro" system, whereby the casks of wine are gradually transferred from the warm top floors of the lodge through the building until it reaches the cool ground floor. The wine had originally been set aside for a vintage release after 20 years of aging, however Blandy's winemaking team was so impressed with the quality that they prepared a special limited bottling to be enjoyed now. Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Madeira 1994 offers enticing aromas of dried fruit, toffee and dark chocolate. Notes of vanilla, oak, toasted almond and honey appear on the sweet, full bodied palate and linger through the long finish.
