In the romantic comedy Catch and Release, Garner (Alias, 13 Going On 30) plays Gray Wheeler, a young woman whose fiance dies unexpectedly before the wedding, leaving Gray unable to afford her home--so she moves in with her fiance's best friends, Sam (Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Dogma) and Dennis (Sam Jaeger, Lucky Number Slevin). But the presence of another old friend named Fritz (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood) leads to the unveiling of a secret: Gray's fiance had a child with another woman. Catch and Release lacks the clear story structure that most romantic comedies are built on, but trades it for a richer sense of the ambiguities of human relationships. Garner, though lovely and personable, is a bit bland--fortunately, she's surrounded by actors with all kinds of edges, including Smith (who shows an unexpected and uncloying earnest side), Fiona Shaw (from the Harry Potter movies) as the fiance's grieving mother, and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), who demonstrates once again her powers as a fearless and surprising actress. Catch and Release is an uneven movie, with a remarkably elegant visual style that sometimes clashes with the workmanlike dialogue, but it can't be written off as the same old Hollywood claptrap. There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera, the town's patriarch Doc Hudson, and kooky tow truck Mater. The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. A tough-as-nails Catholic school principal Sister Aloysius Meryl Streep tries to trick a confession out of a progressive priest Phillip Seymour Hoffman whom she suspects of being a pedophile in this terse drama directed by John Patrick Shanley based on his hit stage play set in the mid 1960s in the wake of the Kennedy assassination. There's a feeling of dread and claustrophobia in the parochial school air: the kids can't sit still and they quake in terror of being called downstairs to face Sister Aloysius's wrath. Amy Adams is the sweet-natured sister in charge of eighth grade who first suspects Father Flynn Hoffman may have seduced a withdrawn African-American boy in her class. Sister Aloysius becomes convinced of the priest's guilt but it's hard to be certain if her judgment is obscured by the change he represents or is just the result of her hardened years of experience. Director of photography Roger Deakins brings a lived-in bleakness to the cold wintry Bronx settings: paint peeling off the rectory walls bare trees reflected in frosty windows wrinkled white linen and old wizened faces in the gloom of the actual location photography. This all contrasts impressively with the hothouse nature of the performances; when Hoffman and Streep finally go toe-to-toe you can feel the gods of acting rise to attention. The real scene stealer here however is Viola Davis shattering as the possibly victimized boy's hard-working mother. She even leaves Streep at a standstill and that's saying something.

Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4's case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah's couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O'Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it's funny, some of it's not, but there's a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. --Bret Fetzer

Chris Ryan's Strike Back is a six-part British television series based on the novel of the same name written by best-selling author and former soldier of the Special Air Service, Chris Ryan. It was produced by Left Bank Pictures for Sky1. The cast of Strike Back is led by Richard Armitage and Andrew Lincoln, also starring Orla Brady, Shelley Conn, Colin Salmon and Jodhi May, including a variety of guest appearances including Toby Stephens, Ewen Bremner, Dhaffer L'Abidine, Shaun Parkes and Alexander Siddig. The series follows John Porter (Armitage), a former British Special Forces soldier, who is drafted back into service by Section 20, a fictional branch of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). The series ran on a multi-million pound budget, and was filmed on location in South Africa, particularly in Gauteng. Ryan became a series consultant. Strike Back commenced airing on 5 May 2010 with two episodes showing a week. The first episode received unofficial overnight ratings of almost 400, 000 viewers in the United Kingdom, which increased to just over one million according to the more official Broadcasters' Audience Research Board. It was met with generally positive reviews; comments of the series ranged from a positive "British action series that packs a Die Hard-style thrill around every corner, " to a more negative "pathetic male fantasy". It was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on 7 June 2010. A 10-part second series, known as Strike Back: Project Dawn, a co-production between Sky and the American network Cinemax, was first broadcast in August 2011. A third series of Strike Back, also to consist of 10 parts, will be released in 2012.

Be prepared to be scared. James Wan's directorial debut, written by and starring Leigh Whannell, is a violent, bloody, psychologically exhausting and exhilarating exercise in terror. Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) are chained in a vile, disgusting bathroom, separated by a bloody corpse holding a gun and a tape recorder. They are each given a saw--the only obvious way out is to cut one of their feet off. Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is a tough, super-jaded cop who springs a hard luck robber, Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), from jail for two days to help nab his former partners. The two men form a kind of friendship (based on mutual hatred) as they chase a trio of remorseless villains through the streets of San Francisco and Cates finds that Hammond's streetwise method of finding the criminals is possibly even more effective than his own by-the-book police procedures. Rounded characters and crackling comedy balance out this this box-office hit. A sequel, ANOTHER 48 HOURS, was produced in 1990.

Director John Badham's remake of French director Luc Besson's LA FEMME NIKITA is a stylish and thrilling adaptation, featuring a solid performance from Bridget Fonda.

Considering it's a saga that started in 1982 with the story of a Vietnam War vet caught in the wrong place at the wrong time that had by 2007 turned into a full-on action spectacular, it's fair to say that the Rambo: Ultimate Blu-ray Collection gives you plenty of bang for your buck. As one of Sylvester Stallone's career-defining roles, John Rambo has become a modern day action cinema icon. Yet it's also been the platform for some very good films. The first, Rambo: First Blood is the best, with Rambo's fight in the mountains against corrupt police officers. Morally ambiguous yet thoughtful, it's a very strong action flick, and Richard Crenna is, as usual, worth the asking price alone. The first of the sequels, Rambo: First Blood Part II, also keeps the momentum up. This is the one where Rambo gets sent off to rescue prisoners of war, and the body count really begins to ramp up. That said, by the time we got to Rambo III, it was all guns blazing-- by then any modicum of reality had disappeared. And the recent fourth outing, Rambo, very much maintains that spirit, with the bullets and bodies mounting up in double time. Beautifully presented in high definition, what the Rambo: Blu-ray Ultimate Collection offers is a defining collection of action cinema, and a bringing together of a franchise of films that, despite their flaws, certainly know how to entertain you. The film cleverly avoids depicting most acts of violence onscreen focusing instead on the cryptic remains of the crimes allowing viewers to investigate along with the detectives. An example of nearly flawless filmmaking the movie features a meticulously crafted screenplay brilliant photography and design sure-handed direction and excellent performances from the entire cast. All of these elements combine to amazing effect in the film's unforgettably stunning finale.
