Who hasn’t gone into a shop or workplace at some point and seen the sign ‘You don’t have to be mad to work here, but it helps!’? This over-used phrase becomes very real in the case of Beth Seager, an Admissions Manager in a busy British NHS hospital. Someone with very little authority but a huge amount of responsibility. She has to find beds for patients in a hospital that is claimed to work at 98% capacity – an impressive achievement that means the maximum time a bed is empty is less than 15 minutes. It’s best not to mention the waiting times. Unfortunately there are far more patients than beds and no money to bring more beds in. Someone has to decide whether a bed is taken by a patient who needs an extensive operation that will allow them to live a few more months, a breast cancer patient, or someone with two broken legs. Added to that, Beth is struggling against her caustic boss ‘Fearsome Fran’ and her meddling assistant ‘Evil Eddy’ who tries to undermine her and take her job. Everything comes to a head when Fearsome Fran announces a new silver bullet plan to free up more beds. Beth knows that not only will it not work, but that she is effectively being demoted. But what can she do? She has 61 more patients than she has beds and a very short period to time to stamp her authority on Fran’s new plan in order to stop it making things much worse. Her luck changes when eligible bachelor Professor John Summers becomes her unlikely ally after becoming frustrated with the number of his operations that keep being cancelled. She also starts receiving some interesting advice over email from her brother-in-law in the US and slowly starts to believe that she can unravel the mess of the health service system and find the core problem and then the main constraint of her particular hospital. We All Fall Down. Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints for Healthcare Systems is a textbook written in the style of a witty, thriller novel. The reader is involved with Beth’s challenges and dilemmas, and through her experiences, discover how Eli Goldratt’s theories can be applied to the healthcare and service industries. You don’t have to be mad to work in the health services, you have to be caring, dedicated and resourceful as any errors can have fatal consequences. If you know someone from the health service, buy them this book so they can see the whole picture and what they can do improve the system. However, this book is also essential reading for anyone who has been frustrated by hospital delays or who works in other service industries such as teaching. We All Fall Down is destined to revolutionise the service industry and not-for-profit sector in the same way that Eli Goldratt’s book The Goal did for the manufacturing industry. Don’t be left on the waiting list!

This book demonstrates service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a concrete discipline rather than a hopeful collection of cloud charts. Built upon the author's firsthand experience rolling out a SOA at a major corporation, SOA in Practice explains how SOA can simplify the creation and maintenance of large-scale applications. Whether your project involves a large set of Web Services-based components, or connects legacy applications to modern business processes, this book clarifies how -- and whether -- SOA fits your needs. SOA has been a vision for years. This book brings it down to earth by describing the real-world problems of implementing and running a SOA in practice. After defining SOA's many facets, examining typical use patterns, and exploring how loose coupling helps build stronger applications, SOA in Practice presents a framework to help you determine when to take advantage of SOA. In this book you will:Focus squarely on real deployment and technology, not just standards maps Examine business problems to determine which ones fit a SOA approach before plastering a SOA solution on top of them Find clear paths for building solutions without getting trapped in the mire of changing web services details Gain the experience of a systems analyst intimately involved with SOA "The principles and experiences described in this book played an important role in making SOA at T-Mobile a success story, with more than 10 million service calls per day." --Dr. Steffen Roehn, Member of the Executive Committee T-Mobile International (CIO) "Nicolai Josuttis has produced something that is rare in the over-hyped world of SOA; a thoughtful work with deep insights based on hands-on experiences. This book is a significant milestone in promoting practical disciplines for all SOA practitioners." --John Schmidt, Chairman, Integration Consortium "The book belongs in the hands of every CIO, IT Director and IT planning manager." --Dr. Richard Mark Soley, Chairman and CEO, Object Management Group; Executive Director, SOA Consortium

Model oriented Systems Engineering Science A Unifying Framework for Traditional and Complex Systems CRC Complex and Enterprise Systems Engineering

Systems engineering (SE) is experiencing a signifi...More Info
Systems engineering (SE) is experiencing a significant expansion that encompasses increasingly complex systems. However, a common body of knowledge on how to apply complex systems engineering (CSE) has yet to be developed. A combination of people and other autonomous agents, crossing organization boundaries and continually changing, these hybrid systems are less predictable while being more self-organizing and adaptive than traditional systems. The growing pains of this evolution and the ever-widening reach of SE technology require an effective foundation for integrating traditional and complex engineering methods, addressing machine and human interaction, as well as scaling up and down, from nano scale to the macro system-of-systems level. Model-oriented Systems Engineering Science: A Unifying Framework for Traditional and Complex Systems addresses solutions to that expansion and integration problem. This text takes advantage of better-understood systems science (SS) to support the transition, identifying and using commonalities between complex systems and other sciences, such as biology, sociology, cognitive science, organizational theory, and computational science. The author defines Model-oriented Systems Engineering Science (MOSES), an organized system that selects appropriate information from these disciplines and unifies it into a coherent framework. The result is a seamless approach to the class of systems across the extended scope of the new SE—a foundation upon which to develop an enhanced and unified SE.Modeling orientation (MO) provides a common perspective on the entire SES/SE enterprise, including all supporting sciences, engineering for the full range of traditional, complex, and hybrid systems, and their management. This book extends existing modeling approaches into an MO that views all science artifacts and engineering artifacts as models of systems. It organizes them into a virtual structured repository called the "SE model space"—effectively a container for the accumulating body of SE and SES knowledge in the form of models and patterns. By organizing and integrating all these elements into a common framework, the author makes the material not only easily accessible but also immediately applicable, and provides a well-grounded basis for future growth and evolution of the SE discipline.

"If you're a systems-level 32-bit or 64-bit Windows developer, whether using the Windows API directly or via .NET interop, you'll definitely want to take a look at this update to Johnson Hart's well-respected and well-loved book. Johnson starts with Windows history and cultural issues and moves through basic and advanced system services in a thoughtful, thorough manner. If Mr. Rogers wrote a book with David Cutler, this is what they'd come up with."—Chris Sells, Longhorn Content Strategist, Microsoft Corporation"While focusing on UNIX developers that are looking to augment their skills or simply jump ship, Windows System Programming, Third Edition is a book that even some seasoned systems-level Windows developers will undoubtedly find useful. This is not your average bland GUI treatise; Hart takes you down to the metal, explains all the relevant concepts clearly and in-depth, and gives you an extensive library of high-quality code examples that can be easily adapted for your own larger applications. Even if you've created server applications before, Windows System Programming will teach you new tricks, shed new light on concepts you thought you'd mastered, and offer new strategies for creating robust and secure solutions."—Klaus H. Probst, Senior Architect, Spherion Technology Services; Microsoft MVP"This book is quite easy to follow; there are clear explanations of everything. Even the explanation of the standards is readable! For a developer not familiar with developing with Windows, Hart's book also provides basic information on where Windows was and where it is today, plus a great explanation of how it is different from Posix and Unix."—Eric Landes, Microsoft MVP, www.aspalliance.com/corporatecoder"Even advanced developers will always need to have a book like this one on hand when the abstractions of a platform like .NET are inadequate or when they need to know more about how .NET is implemented. And the focus on low-level programming (specifically memory management and IO) and other non-GUI topics makes it stand out as superior among other Windows programming books. In keeping the GUI focus to a minimum, Hart's book is able to be comprehensive on the topics contained within."—Michael Davidson, IT AnalystWindows System Programming, Third Edition gives a solid grounding on using the core Windows APIs, includingWin64; is updated for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Framework, and has extensive examples illustrate all topics and show performance impact and tradeoffsA practical guide to the central features and functions of the Windows API, Windows System Programming, Third Edition, will get you up and running with Windows XP and 2003, as well as other Windows systems. Unlike most Windows programming resources, this book focuses exclusively on the core system services—file system, memory, processes and threads, synchronization, communication, and security—rather than on the more commonly featured graphical user interface functions. Especially geared for those already familiar with UNIX or other high-end operating systems, Windows System Programming, Third Edition, helps you to build on your knowledge base to learn the most important features quickly and easily. This new edition has been updated and enhanced with coverage of new API functions, network programming, Windows Services, process and thread management, synchronization, and application performance on single and multiprocessor systems. It also describes techniques for porting applications to Win64, the new Windows 64-bit API.Beginning with an examination of the features required in a single-process application, the text gradually progresses to increasingly sophisticated functions relating to a multithreaded environment. Each chapter contains realistic examples to illustrate the topics. You will find extensive coverage of such critical Windows topics as: File and directory management Character I/O and Unicode The registry Str

A Future Search is a meeting that uniquely enables people to take down the walls that keep them apart. Future Search details this highly successful way for organizations and communities of all types to apply global thinking and democratic values to achieve rapid, whole-systems improvement.  In this widely successful approach, diverse stakeholders in an organization, community, or issue come together for two or three days to explore their shared past, present, and future in a global context. What makes this meeting different from other look-alikes are the transformative underlying principles: Get the whole system in the room; think globally (the "whole elephant") before acting locally; focus on the future and common ground; self-manage tasks and take responsibility for action. The practical uses of this approach are unlimited. Future searches have resulted in stakeholders becoming better able to understand and take responsibility for their joint situation. Others have provided a way to create a shared vision and action agenda for the future while fully facing the past and present. If your goal is a values-based umbrella for action across lines of culture, class, race, ethnicity, status and educational background, future search is for you. Weisbord and Janoff provide guidance for every step of the way, from a detailed discussion of conditions for success to setting up rooms and facilitating the conference. In addition, they include a wealth of resources such as handouts, sample client workbooks, follow-up reports, and other practical tools.  New materials for the third edition include: + New cases and examples + Further emphasis on the four core principles + How the methodology has changed, including practices that are no longer part of the techniques. + Further concentration on follow-up post-conference + Update to the logistics section to show how Future Search can "go green." New chapters will include: + A chapter on the "ripple effect" and how the Future Search movement has gone global, crossing both geographic and cultural boundaries + A chapter on Future Search in cyberspace and how Future Search meetings can be effectively held online and through virtual communities + Interviews with Future Search leaders and what they accomplished and learned in the last few six - seven years

Heian Flow System
Heian Flow System

As a student the author enjoyed the power and grace of kata but was frustrated by the lack of intelligent explanation available for the use of the techniques. The bunkai that resembled the kata was awkward and implausible while the bunkai that seemed effective looked nothing like the actual movements in the kata. Convinced that the movements must have had some form of combat effectiveness originally, he decided to study, cross train and look out of the box himself to find an answer, an answer that led to the drills in this book. This book takes the 5 Heian Kata and breaks them down into progressively dynamic training and sparring drills to teach students how to effectively counter the habitual acts of street violence. The drills all initiate from movements that simulate the body's natural primal and protective flinch responses to attacks, and teach students how to close and create distance while moving freely between ballistic and grappling techniques incorporating close range striking, trapping, throwing, unbalancing and locking movements that mirror the forms. Each drill is clearly illustrated with photos and explanatory text. The drills interlink so that students quickly find themselves able to move freely from one Kata to another mid attack and defence to respond to the scenario created by their partner. The book also contains a detailed analysis of technique effectiveness, an outline of the history of the forms and a discussion of the nature of violent crime and its implications for martial arts practice. This book shows how to change kata from a sterile solo exercise into a dynamic form that belongs at the heart of your training. Whether you are interested in competition fighting or want to learn effective self defence, the drills in this book will improve your understanding of kata, timing, distance and repertoire. Heian Flow System will not only change the way you perceive these 'training' forms, but also the way you approach all kata. The author has trained in several martial arts and presently holds instructor grades in four separate systems. In addition to martial arts classes he has taught in secondary education, university and the military. His research training as a Doctor of History has always focused his approach to Karate; searching for effective answers to the question of bunkai. He is known for his practical approach to Karate training through his regular column in Traditional Karate Magazine and has taught seminars across the UK and in the USA. In addition to his writing and research he works as a senior officer in the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve Training Branch and teaches seminars across the UK between running two dedicated Personal Safety clubs in Buckinghamshire, England.

After a sordid litany of recalls courtesy of the food industry, consumers are pointing the finger at companies that have failed to institute proper recall prevention techniques. While historical analysis shows no company is exempt from recall risk, most can be prevented with an efficient and verifiable quality control program. Authored by a 20-year food management specialist, Food Industry Quality Control Systems is the only single-source summary of basic quality control program requirements. With an emphasis on top-down management commitment, this book demonstrates the complete information collection process and essential program elements, including pest control, lot coding, organizational charts, specifications, supplier certification, and sanitation programs. This valuable reference devotes an entire chapter to each of the program areas discussed for enhanced understanding of each. Additionally, it outlines a variety of sub-programs and functions, including HACCP, a seven-principle framework that assists food manufacturers in ensuring comprehensive and sustainable food safety. This example-filled resource helps industry decision-makers answer these key questions: What will management’s commitment to quality be? Will top management provide the personnel and resources to create and maintain a thorough quality control program? Who will run the quality program, and what will the reporting structure be? Where will ideas regarding quality come from? This book is a springboard for food industry professionals to start their own quality protection program while adhering to federal, state, and local regulations. It is a clear and concise knowledge base that food safety and quality managers truly cannot afford to be without. Readers can visit the CRC website to download supporting programs in a "plug-and-play" format and adaptable forms with specific examples and resources that enable companies to customize forms to fit their own needs.

Completely revised and updated, Computer Systems, ...More Info
Completely revised and updated, Computer Systems, Fourth Edition offers a clear, detailed, step-by-step introduction to the central concepts in computer organization, assembly language, and computer architecture. It invites students to explore the many dimensions of computer systems through a top-down approach to levels of abstraction. By examining how the different levels of abstraction relate to one another, the text helps students look at computer systems and their components as a unified concept. The new Fourth Edition is based on the Pep/8 assembler and simulator, which was designed to teach the basics of the classic von Neumann machine. Pep/8 now includes a new symbolic trace feature that displays global variables and the run-time stack in real time as the student single steps through the program. Throughout the text Warford emphasizes the importance of mastering fundamental computer concepts, which provides a basis for understanding both current and future technology, while also stressing the importance of keen problem solving skills. Computer Systems, Fourth Edition covers all of the core topics in the Architecture and Organization category of the ACM-IEEE Curriculum 2001 Guidelines for Computer Science.

Is the Law of Attraction real? Or is it just a bunch of mystical mumbo-jumbo? Of course, it's real. The problem is that many experts make it seem so hokey that most ordinary people are put off by it. This is why this book is different. Abandoning a metaphysical approach, Rolf Nabb, author of Dating Sense and Why Can't I Just Be Happy? explains the Law of Attraction in everyday terms that even the most cynical of individuals will be able to agree with. In You Don't Need a System: A Straightforward Guide to Using the Law of Attraction, he clarifies many of the more far-fetched aspects of the Law of Attraction in a way that shows that it's not a magical concept at all but rather one in which everyone can participate. Improving your outlook and perspective is the name of the game as he boils it down to its essence and shows you that all you have to do is change your attitude. If you're the type of person who wants to believe in the Law of Attraction, but just can't suspend your skepticism long enough to do so, then You Don't Need a System: A Straightforward Guide to Using the Law of Attraction is the book for you. Just as he did in his other books, Rolf Nabb has the ability to explain complex subjects in a way that is easy to understand and even easier to apply. He will show you that the Law of Attraction isn't just a bunch of metaphysical malarkey, but rather the idea that your attitude is everything and if you have a good one, then good things will happen for you.

The CAMP system is a step-by-step guide to a new w...More Info
The CAMP system is a step-by-step guide to a new way of eating. In today’s increasingly dark tangle of diet programs, fads and outrageous promises, the CAMP system stands out as a clear, simple approach to defining new balance and harmony with food and eating relationships. Under the CAMP system, you can recapture control over food--control that you’ve given away or simply do not use. There are three paths to personal power in regaining this control: Attitudes, Mindful Eating and Portions. The book provides detailed exercises and activities that give you practice on each of these paths. You will learn to adopt a new set of attitudes about food and eating, attitudes that reshape your whole approach to food. You will learn how to bring mindfulness to all aspects of eating. Your eating will slow down, become deliberate and purposeful. As a result, you’ll come to appreciate food far more than you thought possible. You will learn potent strategies about portions with food and setting boundaries for yourself. With portions, you’ll challenge all your eating behaviors and rewrite your own eating rules from scratch. Thus, the CAMP system---Control, Attitudes, Mindful eating and Portions---is the most important alternative to diets and other forms of self-torture to come along in a long time. The system is a permanent, enjoyable, life-changing approach to eating that will serve you and your life’s mission. As the author of the CAMP System, I developed it as a result of my own health problems, stemming mostly from my obesity. At 60 pounds overweight, I had developed a herniated disk and had sleep apnea. I knew that I had to lose weight, but I knew that I couldn’t exercise (I was in too much pain) and I vowed to myself that I’d never, never go on a diet again. This crisis point in my life led me to examine carefully my eating behaviors. I realized that the problem really wasn’t with food--it was with me: my attitudes about food, the way I ate mindlessly and the lack of any boundaries with my portions. So slowly I began to change how I ate. I didn’t worry about what types of food I ate; indeed, I continued to eat the foods I loved. The significant changes occurred in my view of food, in how much attention I was paying to the food as I ate it, and in how I could create boundaries for myself that made sense. Almost immediately, the pounds began flying off. It was as if my body was saying to me: “Finally, you got it right. Now I can get rid of all this excess weight, and you don’t even have to exercise to do it.” Eight months later, I found myself 60 pounds down. My apnea was gone. The pain in my back had withdrawn. At 53 years old, I was back to the weight of my youth. But more importantly I had changed at a fundamental, core level. My worldview about eating and food has shifted in a big way. Food was no longer my enemy. Cookies and doughnuts and fried chicken were as much my allies as were broccoli and carrots. All were welcome in my world, because I knew how to regard food, how to control it and how to bring personal power to every bite. In 1999 I taught my first CAMP course and have since taught many more. My story is not unique. My simple message of slowing down, enjoying food, changing attitudes and controlling portions appeals to a wide audience of individuals who have given up on diets and are seeking something more permanent, more rewarding, and more enriching than counting calories and food exchanges. For myself, I have maintained my new weight for nearly a year. I enjoy all foods and look forward to eating. I know the CAMP system can work for me for the rest of my life.

Achievement A Proven System for Next Level Growth
Achievement: A Proven System f...
Achievement is simply the result of doing the "rig...More Info
Achievement is simply the result of doing the "right things" consistently over a sustained period of time. Doing the "right things" is a direct result of your personal choice. Your future is built on the choices you make, day by day, moment by moment. It is a natural, human tendency to disregard the importance of your everyday choices. I think we minimize the importance of our choices because the consequences of those choices are delayed. We do not experience immediate results from most of our choices. If we did, we certainly would be more selective with our choices! Instead, we are free to make a bad or ineffective choice and feel no immediate impact, leaving us with the impression that no harm has been done. We have all watched superstar athletes at the heights of their careers, on top of the world, suddenly make a very bad choice that later brings down everything they have worked for. We ask, "Why did they do that?" The answer is simple: They thought they could get away with it. All of us would make better decisions if there were immediate consequences to our choices. For example, if you immediately gained 50 pounds every time you ate a single bowl of ice cream, you would never eat another bowl of ice cream again. What’s more, ice cream companies would be out of business by tomorrow morning! But that is not the way it works. Here is the reality: You eat a bowl of ice cream and nothing happens immediately. Ice cream taste good, so you decide to eat two bowls tomorrow, three the next day, and so on. Six months later you step onto the scales and find that you have gained 50 pounds. Your response is, "Why have I gained 50 pounds? I’m shocked!" The 50 pounds came from your daily choices about ice cream. The consequences of bad choices accumulated gradually without your noticing it. You can, of course, choose to stop eating ice cream daily, and in six months, lose the extra 50 pounds. This is an exaggerated example of how choice is directly related to long-term results, and you should never be shocked with your results because you are in complete control. You are not a victim. The quality of your life is all about your choices. Every day you make thousands of choices. You enjoy the freedom to choose your thoughts, perspectives, actions, and associations. However, each choice you make in life has a consequence. So, by filling your days with effective choices, you build a future of beneficial consequences. What that means is this: The quality of your choices will determine the quality of your life. The Achievement System The foundation of any system of achievement is learning to make effective, daily choices. Surprisingly, this is a unique ability. We do not naturally possess the capacity of making consistent, effective choices! Why? Before we answer that question, it is necessary to understand what effective choice is. Effective choice is defined as those choices that directly relate to your immediate goals. For instance, if we continue with the ice cream example previously used, the choice of eating too much ice cream simply because it tastes good is an instinctive, ineffective choice if health and weight control is your goal. However, the choice of limiting the excessive intake of calories from ice cream is an effective choice directly related to the goal of maximizing your health. Therefore, effective choices are goal-directed choices, not instinctive choices. Now, back to the question first posed: Why do we NOT naturally possess the capacity to make consistent effective choices related to our achievement? The answer is both simple and complex. Your natural, human instincts have one goal for you: your safety. Your instincts really do not care about your goals, only about your safety and comfort. When you manage your daily activities from your natural, human instincts, your response will always be in favor of keeping you where you are. It’s natural to stay right where you are. Y
