Strange but beautiful. A caudex-forming aroid from Kenya has 3in, shiny-green leaves arranged distichously along bottle-shaped stems, giving a cycad-like appearance. Easy to grow, good as a houseplant, bonsai, for shaded landscapes or terrariums. An ancient relic, along with Gonatopus, with a unique characteristic (for Aroids) in that the leaflet can fall to the ground, root and form bulblets. This feature is not known in aroids outside of the Zamioculcadeae.

This upright, dense evergreen has pointed, leathery, dark green leaves arranged on stiff, symmetrical branches and works very well as a screen, hedge, strong accent plant, or framing tree. Old Podocarpus bonsai are impressive with their stately elegance. Although trunk and bark formation always takes quite a few years, Podocarpus growth varies with climate - slow-growing indoors and towards the cooler end of their range, fast-growing in sunny areas. Their evergreen leaves are similar in formation and shape to yews, although Podocarpus leaves are larger - just under 2 inches to a maximum of 4 inches. Likes direct sunlight. Podocarpus may suffer leaf-burn if not given shade during the hottest part of the day. Zones 9 through 11. Will survive light frost, but for best results, keep above 55F. Can be grown successfully indoors in a well-lit spot. Prefers winter temperatures between 61-68F. Watering: Likes slightly moist soil, but be sure to provide adequate drainage. Gray needles are a sign of overwatering. Daily misting is appreciated by indoor plants. Top picture is size you receive in 4" pot. Feeding: Peters 20-20-20, fish emulsion and fertilizer cakes are recommended. For indoor growers who can't take the fishy smell, liquid bonsai fertilizer can be used, applied every two weeks in warm weather, every six in winter. Podocarpus likes slightly acidic soil Young Podocarpus plants have a tendancy to grow straight up, with no side branching. This is easily remidied by cutting them back hard, which will result in aggressive back budding. Pinch back new growth as necessary, and remove oversized needles.

QUINCE: Flowering quince (Chaenomeles speciosa or Japonica) is an old-fashioned deciduous shrub that American farmers of the 1800s often grew on their homesteads for its beauty and sometimes for a little bit of fruit. It's a bit of a mystery why farmers chose to grow this plant, as it does not produce large amounts of quality fruit--it is thought perhaps they simply loved the beauty of its early spring flowers. 'Toyo-Nishiki' Flowering Quince - Chaenomeles spec 'Toyo-Nishiki' 'Toyo-Nishiki' (C. speciosa) A rare combination of red, white, and pink flowers compose a rousing floral display. Upright growth habit. Prized in Japan for bonsai, jam making and for its large colorful blooms. Fantastic bonsai!

Japanese cedar is a tall, cone-shaped evergreen with bluish green foliage and a massive trunk with thick reddish brown bark that shreds and peels in long strips. This is a fast-growing tree that, in its native habitat, can get more than 180' tall with a trunk diameter exceeding 12'; ornamental specimens are rarely more than 60' tall, though, and many of the named selections stay much smaller. The branches are arranged in horizontal tiers, ascending at first, then drooping near their ends. The flattened, wedge-shaped leaves are about a half-inch long and point forward, while their bases clasp the twigs. The leaves are overlapping and crowded in 5 ranks that spiral around and completely cloak the twigs. Culture Japanese cedar can grow to 25' tall in just 10 years. Light: Full sun to partial shade. Moisture: Japanese cedar needs well-drained soil but plenty of water for best growth. Never allow the soil to dry out and mist if the humidity stays very low. Hardiness: USDA Zones 6 - 9. In zones 6 and 7, expect the foliage to turn brown or purplish in winter. Propagation: Japanese cedar can be grown from seed. Named cultivars are propagated vegetatively by rooting mature tip cuttings in late summer or autumn, or by layering. To start a new plant by layering, cram a section of branch into a pot or bury it in the ground. Water occasionally and in a couple of months the potted section will have roots, and you can sever the branch from the mother plant. Allow it establish for another month or two before moving. Young, well-rooted specimens transplant easily.

Shimpaku Chinese Juniper Bonsai - Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku' A very dwarf spreading upright Chinese Juniper. Used extensively for Bonsai. What defines "dwarf" and "miniature" Dwarf varieties grow one to six inches per year. Miniature varieties grow less than one inch per year. These plants are more valuable because they grow so slow. They can be used as: Bonsai, Rock Gardens, Trough Gardens, Patio Containers, and even Garden Railways.

'Young Lady Smokebush - Cotinus coggygria 'Young Lady'' Young Lady is an exciting new smokebush from the Netherlands. Developed by plantsman Henny Kolster this unusual shrub is unlike any other smokebush in that it blooms as a young plant and it blooms like crazy. Dwarf Fruiting PomegranateThis exotic shaped fruit is sweet in flavor and can be easily grown inside as a potted plant, and if confined to the size of a one gallon pot will not grow taller than about two feet. However, if it is planted outside it can grow up to three feet if fertilized heavily. This unique shrub has a constant load of fruit or blooms and the fruit is sweeter if grown in full sun outdoors, but it is usually grown as a flashy ornamental. Florists greatly favor this plant because of its ease in drying for use in wreaths and as Christmas tree ornaments. As a bonsai tree it is grown for its brilliant orange-red trumpet-like flowers followed in fall by ornamental, small, spherical-like orange-red fruits. Has dark green leaves with shades of bronze. The plant you will receive can be grown as a house plant or trained as a bonsai! It is growing in a 4 inch pot.

The Japanese tree lilac has cherrylike bark and grows 25 to 30 feet in height. It extends the lilac season by flowering in mid June, after the shrub lilacs. Its blossoms are initially rose-colored, then quickly turn creamy white, emitting a soft, sweet aroma like that of privet. Hardy in zones 3-7. Proper name: Syringa reticulata. It also makes an excellent bonsai!

The Strawberry Tree, is an evergreen shrub or small tree, which can reach a height of up to 20 feet, but is often trimmed shorter. It produces masses of drooping, beautiful white flowers, which are often tinged with pink or green. They are bell-shaped, and honey-scented. The tree carries both mature fruits and flowers at the same time and is then incredibly beautiful. The fruits, are over 1/2 inches in diameter. They ripen through yellow to scarlet and deep crimson. From a distance, they look like strawberries, hence the plant's common name. The taste of the fruit is described as sweet.They can also be cooked and are used to make delicious and nourishing jams and preserves. They are also used to make the best "Tsipouro" and other wine! Hardy in zones 7-11. In cooler regions the Strawberry Tree makes an excellent patio plant, moved outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter. It can be kept trimmed at any height. Proper name: Arbutus unedo

An evergreen shrub growing to 9". It is in leaf all year, in flower from May to June. The flowers are sweetly scented. The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, acid and neutral soils and can grow in very acid soil. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland). It requires moist soil. A compact evergreen ground cover with dark glossy leaves. It produces white bell-shaped flowers that mature into red round berries. The aromatic berries and foliage contain wintergreen oil. Zone 4-8. Locations: Woodland, Sunny Edge, Dappled Shade. Edible Uses: Fruit - raw or cooked. A sweet flavour. The fruit is about 3/8" in diameter.

What a fantastic bonsai! Small fine leaves spiral around stems, and the truck of reddish-brown fibrous bark can be absolutely stunning. It is pyramidal when young, but as it matures it gets horizontal branches. Leaves are sage green in summer, then russet or soft brown to orange-brown in the fall. It is deciduous, so it loses its needles in the fall. This cypress gets 1"-2" cones. When grown outside as a full-size tree, it can get 50' to 100' tall and 20' to 30' wide. It gets cypress knees when grown in or near water. Cypress also makes a good street tree because it has easy autumn cleanup. Hardy in zones 4-9; Deciduous; Growth rate is moderate; Requires sun, but is tolerant of a variety of soils (wet, dry, compacted).

MAPLE TREES: Maple trees are large, deciduous trees that grow throughout the world. In the United States, they are more common in the northern states. Many people know maple trees for their spectacular fall color. Autumn Fire Maple: This laceleaf Japanese Maple is a small tree with finely pointed green leaves that turn bright crimson in the fall. A vigorous tree with a wide, cascading/weeping habit. As with many Japanese Maples, quite suitable for bonsai. When choosing a location, keep in mind that this tree has a slow growth rate. It grows up to 8 feet in height and 8 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 8. Prefers well-drained soil that is rich on organic material and full or partial sun.

C. japonica has a spreading habit, though of relatively small stature. The spiny branches host flowers in orange, coral and red, then glossy leaves, and later in the summer and autumn, pale yellow fruits flushed with rose. This is a very attractive deciduous flowering shrub with a spreading and rounded habit. Leaves are glossy, ovate, and medium green up to 2-1/2 inches long. Clusters of white, pink, orange, scarlet, or crimson cup shaped flowers 1 to 2 inches across, are borne on spiny branches. Very nice for a shrub border or espalliered to wall. Cut branches with swollen flower buds may be forced indoors, making a welcomed winter flower arrangement. To prune, remove only crossing, diseased or broken branches. Flowering quince should never be sheared. Zone 5-9
