Ready to Plant: A live PINCUSH...The stunning Hawaiian Protea plant is unlike any t... The stunning Hawaiian Protea plant is unlike any tropical flower you've ever seen. So exotic and unusual, it was named after a Greek god, Proteus, who could change his physical appearance on a whim. Today, there are over 1400 varieties of Protea with different sizes, shapes, textures and colors. Protea flowers keep unusually long as cut flowers (10-14 days) and are ideal for flower baskets. Hung upside down, they dry beautifully, and are often made into wreaths. Dried, they can last for years. In landscaping: In frost-free regions of the United States, proteas may be planted directly into the ground, making sure your soil is very well drained. Soil pH should be between 5.0 and 6.5. Plant your protea starters in full sun, water regularly---once or twice a week---for the first twelve months. You may expect your first protea blooms in 18-24 months after planting. In a container: Transplant into a one-gallon container with a soil mixture of 1/3 sand, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 redwood shavings or peat moss. Place container in full sun and water once or twice a week in the warm growing months. Fertilize after six months. When the first sign of frost is apparent, move your protea plant into a sheltered environment. When moving indoors, place your plant in the warmest sun exposure possible. Keep plant away from direct heat (heaters, fireplaces, etc.) As soon as weather permits, place your protea plant outside. After growing your plant in a one gallon container for 6-8 months, transplant into a 5-gallon container and repeat the above steps. After approximately 12 months in a 5-gallon container, start to look for your exotic protea to bloom. Flower buds appear in the late fall or early winter. Hardy bamboo palm is a clump forming bamboo-like palm that distinguishes itself by its cold hardiness. Gardeners in mild climates who get occasional frosts can use this plant to extend their palm repertoire. Hardy bamboo palm forms clumps of slender stems up to 8 ft in height. Papery matte-finish leaves are arranged sparsely up and down the stems. These pinnate leaves are up to 2 ft in length and are composed of leaflets, each about 8 in long by 1 in wide, attached along the midrib. A drooping inflorescence appears in summer. Hardy bamboo palm is dioecious - male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. Female flowers are followed by the fruit which are bright orange berries about a quarter inch in diameter. These seem to light up the shade garden as they dangle in drooping clusters from the graceful stems. Hardiness: Zones 8-11 Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! Throw in factors that affect southern gardeners, and the topic becomes as thorny as wild blackberry. Shade varies at different times of day, and gardeners need to take this into account. Shade changes from season to season, too, even within the same yard. In Southern Shade: A Plant Selection Guide, landscape expert Jo Kellum takes the mystery out of the murky parts of the yard. Some plants desire rich, moist soil, decaying leaves, and just a bit of sunlight that filters through leafy tree canopies. Others need shade all day long. Still, others thrive in morning shade, followed by afternoon sun or the reverse. Sometimes the soil beneath trees can be notoriously dry where tree roots absorb all the available moisture. Jo Kellum lets gardeners know what to grow in the gloom and illustrates her choices with over two hundred color photographs. Homeowners need advice about landscaping workhorses for the shade-trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and vines--in addition to annuals and perennials. Unfortunately, "shade gardening" seems to apply mainly to dainty plants that don't solve the problem of how to fill a wet, shadowy spot or how to block the view of the neighbor's air conditioning unit. Southern Shade helps the gardener pick the right plant for the right kind of shady area. There are recommendations for little flowers, big trees, and everything in between. Jo Kellum's advice is simple for beginners, yet complete enough for professionals. It makes an ideal companion when shopping. For those facing both shade and sun and looking for ideas suitable for sunny spots, Kellum has also written Southern Sun: A Plant Selection Guide. Jo Kellum is a landscape architect, writer, and photographer based in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. She has authored regional editions of Landscaping 1-2-3 for Home Depot Books and gardening and landscaping titles in Ortho's All About series. Her work has appeared in Southern Living, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Country Gardens, Renovation Style, and other magazines. Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! Many varieties are strikingly beautiful — well suited to doing double duty as delicious sources of sweet, organic fruit and as ornamental additions to the home landscape. Backyard fruit plants also tie in perfectly with the growing locavore movement. It's difficult to find food that's more local than one's own backyard! "Luscious landscaping, " as author Lee Reich calls it, takes fruit-bearing plants off the commercial farm and replants the prettiest and tastiest specimens in suburban and rural yards. Spring blossoms, summer and fall fruit, and the year-round presence of the plants themselves bring a special magic to the home landscape. Pillowy pink blossoms on peach branches or the bright orange fruit of persimmon trees perk up their surroundings with color and drama. Beautiful plants, yes, but these landscaping additions also provide sweet, nutritious fruit. Homegrown, organic varieties bear almost no resemblance to commercially produced fruits, which are bred and selected to withstand shipping and refrigerated storage conditions. It's hard to believe that Alpine strawberries and those grown in California and shipped across the country are even related! Fruitscaping is a complete, no-nonsense guide to growing temperate-zone fruit, with information on everything from planting and pruning to pest control and harvesting. Readers will find all the basics of landscaping with fruit — site analysis, climate assessment, understanding soil and sun, plant selection, and optimizing growing conditions. An encyclopedia of 38 plants includes information for each entry on hardiness, size, potential pests, special care and pruning, harvesting, and visual appeal. Get free shipping on orders over $25!
