As one of the greatest, most celebrated athletes in history, Michael Jordan conquered professional basketball as no one had before. Powered by a potent mix of charisma, nearly superhuman abilities, and a ferocious need to dominate the game, he won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and captured every basketball award and accolade conceivable before retiring and taking a top executive post with the Washington Wizards. But retirement didn't suit the man who was once king, and at the advanced age of thirty-eight Michael Jordan set out to reclaim the court that had been his dominion. When Nothing Else Matters is the definitive account of Jordan's equally spectacular and disastrous return to basketball. Washington Post writer Michael Leahy reveals the striking contrast between the public Jordan and the man whose personal style alienated teammates and the Washington owner who ousted him.

America's enemies are no longer overseas.  Those that want to cause us harm have arrived on our shores.  Your neighbors, your co-workers, the merchants you buy from, the people who come into your house the people who walk by you on the sidewalk.   Who can you really trust?  Is anyone really who they say they are?   In Enemy Among Us, decisions have been made by people, focused on their own self-interests, not those of their friends and neighbors:    A series of violent police officer murders in Philly with the suspected killers found dead within hours...   An Iranian immigrant walks into the FBI with a bizarre tale of kidnapping, manipulation and knowledge of a sleeper cell about to be activated ...   A Mexican billionaire wants revenge for perceived injustice forced on his country by its northern neighbor and is willing to use his fortune to fund it...   A group is dropped off at the site of the Liberty Bell, but they aren't there as tourists...   Facing these threats, Jordan Wright and his team are uncharacteristically a step behind in determining the intent and true target until it's potentially too late. Reaching out to non-traditional resources such as a Franciscan priest and a former leader of the East German Stasi, every avenue is explored to understand the connection between these events.   All of this leads to something but no one can figure out exactly what until terror breaks out on Independence Mall. As events unfold, Wright's team determines the true target and brings assets to bear to overt the destruction of the home of liberty, but just as the event is under control, Wright stumbles upon the true intent of the terrorist, a well planned and precisely carried out robbery of the U.S. Mint.  The race begins to find out who is behind this assault on America with the intent to bring down the financial system of the free world.   Betrayal, self-interest and personal enrichment at the expense of others are at the heart of most thrillers.  In this debut novel, it drives the action packed plot through a series of twists and turns.  Just when you think you have it figured out it will turn you a whole different direction.

It is a title of great honor, yet every year The One is led away to the frightening and mysterious Palace of Smoke... never to return. THE RIVER JORDAN is the fictionalized account of a...More Info
THE RIVER JORDAN is the fictionalized account of an actual escape on the Underground Railroad of a slave and her seven children from a western Virginia tobacco plantation on the Ohio River in 1843. The Ohio, the River Jordan to slaves, was the border between free and slave states. All the book's major characters and events are real, portrayed as reported in newspapers and historical documents of the time. This vivid, inspiring chronicle of a family's harrowing 2 1/2-week flight across Ohio to freedom in Canada is also a story of heroism and compassion, by black and white Americans alike. There may be no more important story in American history than that of slavery, its abolishment, and the commitment of ordinary Americans to help end this abomination by putting their lives, the lives of their families, and their livelihoods at stake to help the many thousands of slaves who escaped. Jane's story is more timely than ever, and not just because for the first time in our nation's history a black family occupies the White House. Virtually all wars and acts of terrorism in the world today are the result of ethnic hatred and racial prejudice. What better example has there ever been of compassionate, courageous cooperation between the peoples of different races than the Underground Railroad? That inspiring story may have been America's finest hour and is still vital not only for its historical significance but because of what it has to tell us about ourselves today: who we are as Americans, black and white, and what, together, we can accomplish. In the way that enough healing time has to pass before a society is truly ready to examine and learn from its past, the Underground Railroad is a story whose time has finally come.

During his long reign (1953–1999), King Hussein of Jordan was one of the most dominant figures in Middle Eastern politics and a consistent proponent of peace with Israel. This is the first major account of his life, written with access to his official documents and with the cooperation (but not approval) of his family and staff, and also extensive interviews with international policy makers. For more than forty years, Hussein walked a tightrope between the Palestinians and Arab radicals on the one hand and Israel on the other. Avi Shlaim reveals that, for the sake of dynastic and national survival, Hussein initiated a secret dialogue with Israel in 1963 that encompassed more than one thousand hours with Golda Meir, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Shamir, Yitzhak Rabin, and countless others. Shlaim reconstructs this dialogue across battle lines from previously untapped Israeli records and the firsthand accounts of key participants, and makes clear that it was Israeli intransigence that was largely responsible for the failure to achieve a peaceful settlement between 1967 and 1994.At Hussein’s memorial service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Prince of Wales hailed him as “a man amongst men, a king amongst kings.” Lion of Jordan illuminates the triumphs and disappointments, the qualities and character of this extraordinary soldier and statesman, and significantly rewrites the history of the Middle East over the past fifty years.

Jordan s Point Virginia Archaeology in Perspective Prehistoric to Modern Times
Jordan's Point, Virginia: Arch...
Jordan’s Point, a nearly triangular promontory in ...More Info
Jordan’s Point, a nearly triangular promontory in the James River, is situated in Prince George County, just east of the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers. A broad terrace overlooking the James, Jordan’s Point is bounded by small streams, tidal marshes, and protective uplands that rise to a height of 100 feet or more. In 1607, when the first European colonists saw Jordan’s Point, it was graced by the homes and cleared fields of natives they would call the Weyanoke. Virginia colonist Samuel Jordan established a community called Jordan’s Journey around 1621, giving his name to what became known as Jordan’s Point. In time, the settlement became a hub of social and political life. By 1660, Jordan’s Point had come into the possession of the Blands, one of England’s most important mercantile families. They leased their property to one or more of their agents, usually merchants and mariners involved in inter-colonial trade. Richard Bland I and his descendants developed Jordan’s Point into a family seat and working plantation they retained until after the Civil War. At Jordan’s Point enslaved men, women, and children toiled in the fields, enabling the Blands to prosper. Richard Bland IV went on to become a distinguished American patriot, and one of his sons became a physician.Featuring more than one hundred photos and illustrations, most in color, and intended for a general reader, Jordan’s Point, Virginia: Archaeology in Perspective, Prehistoric to Modern Times tells the story of Jordan’s Point, which spans thousands of years, through the cultural features that archaeologists have unearthed there. This is a book that will attract readers interested in Native American studies, Virginia and colonial history, and archaeology.Distributed for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources

Walter LaFeber's timely analysis looks at the ways that triumphant capitalism, coupled with high-tech telecommunications, is conquering the nations of the world, one mind—one pair of feet—at a time. With Michael Jordan and the New Global Capitalism, Walter LaFeber has written a biography, a social history, and a far-ranging economic critique. From basketball prodigy to international phenomenon to seductive commercial ideal, Michael Jordan is the supreme example of how American corporations have used technology in a brave, massively wired new world to sell their products in every corner of the globe. LaFeber's examination of Nike and its particular dominion over the global marketplace is often scathing, while his fascinating mini-biography of Michael Jordan and the commercial history of basketball reveal much about American society. For this new paperback edition, LaFeber has added a chapter on globalization in a changed world, after mass protests and since September 11. "Bold, riveting....Brilliantly illuminates how hyper-US capitalism has spread its financial wings around the globe."—Douglas Brinkley "LaFeber brings an impressive intellect to bear on his subject."—Barbara Rudolph, Chicago Tribune

“A story of love and loss, Chasing Jordan is a quiet novel with a thunderclap at its heart. With this first novel, Ms. Boehringer gives notice that she is a writer to watch. This is my kind of novel. Whatever Heidi Boehringer writes next, I will read.”—Harry Crews When Meg approaches home with her daughter in the back seat, she sees her husband spying on the neighbor, who is gardening in very short shorts. In this moment of distraction, she hits and kills her two-year-old son, Jordan. With humor that is both provocative and totally unpredictable, Chasing Jordan shows how the road to forgiveness is both twisted and dangerous. Heidi W. “Directed by Desire . . . is a powerful addition to the entire canon of American poetry.”—Booklist Now in paperback, Directed by Desire is the definitive overview of June Jordan’s -poetry. Collecting the finest work from Jordan’s ten volumes, as well as dozens of “last poems” that were never published in Jordan’s lifetime, these more than six hundred pages overflow with intimate lyricism, elegance, fury, meditative solos, and dazzling vernacular riffs. As Adrienne Rich writes in her introduction, June Jordan “wanted her readers, listeners, students, to feel their own latent power—of the word, the deed, of their own beauty and intrinsic value.” From “These Poems”: These poems they are things that I do in the dark reaching for you whoever you are and are you ready? The cloth edition of Directed by Desire was selected as a Library Journal Poetry Book of the Year and received the Lambda Book Award for Lesbian Poetry. June Jordan taught at UC Berkeley for many years and founded Poetry for the People. Her twenty-eight books include poetry, essays, fiction, and children’s books. She was a regular columnist for The Progressive and a prolific writer whose articles appeared in The Village Voice, The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and The Nation. After her death in 2002, a school in the San Francisco School District was renamed in her honor.

Revered by Americans across the political spectrum...More Info
Revered by Americans across the political spectrum, Barbara Jordan was "the most outspoken moral voice of the American political system, " in the words of former President Bill Clinton, who awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. Throughout her career as a Texas senator, U.S. congresswoman, and distinguished professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, Barbara Jordan lived by a simple creed: "Ethical behavior means being honest, telling the truth, and doing what you said you were going to do." Her strong stand for ethics in government, civil liberties, and democratic values still provides a standard around which the nation can unite in the twenty-first century. This volume brings together several major political speeches that articulate Barbara Jordan's most deeply held values. They include: "Erosion of Civil Liberties, " a commencement address delivered at Howard University on May 12, 1974, in which Jordan warned that "tyranny in America is possible" "The Constitutional Basis for Impeachment, " Jordan's ringing defense of the U.S. Constitution before the House Judiciary Committee investigating the Watergate break-in Keynote addresses to the Democratic National Conventions of 1976 and 1992, in which Jordan set forth her vision of the Democratic Party as an advocate for the common good and a catalyst of change Testimony in the U.S. Congress on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork and on immigration reform Meditations on faith and politics from two National Prayer Breakfasts Acceptance speech for the 1995 Sylvanus Thayer Award presented by the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy, in which Jordan challenged the military to uphold the values of "duty, honor, country" Accompanying the speeches, some of which readers can also watch on an enclosed DVD, are context-setting introductions by volume editor Max Sherman. The book concludes with the eloquent eulogy that Bill Moyers delivered at Barbara Jordan's memorial service in 1996, in which he summed up Jordan's remarkable life and career by saying, "Just when we despaired of finding a hero, she showed up, to give the sign of democracy.... This is no small thing. This, my friends, this is grace. And for it we are thankful."

A Journal for Jordan is a mother’s letter to her son about the father he lost before he could even speak–including a fiercely honest account of her search for answers about Charles’s death. It is also a father’s advice and prayers for the son he will never know. A History of Jordan
Philip Robins' survey of Jordan's political histor...More Info
Philip Robins' survey of Jordan's political history begins in the early 1920s, continues through the years of the British Mandate, and traces events over the next half century to the present day. Throughout the period, the country's fortunes were closely identified with its head of state, King Hussein, until his death in 1999. In the early days, as the author testifies, the king's prospects were often regarded as grim. However, both King and country survived a variety of existential challenges, from assassination attempts and internal subversion, to a civil war with the Palestine Liberation Organisation and, in the 1970s and 1980s, Jordan emerged as an apparently stable and prosperous state. However, King Hussein's death, the succession of his son, Abdullah II, and recent political upheavals have plunged the country back into uncertainty. This is an incisive account, compellingly told, about one of the leading players in the Middle East. Philip Robins is University Lecturer in Politics with special reference to the Middle East in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford. His most recent book is Suits and Uniforms: Turkish Foreign Policy since the Cold War (2003).

SYNOPSIS My Trip Down The Pink Carpet is Leslie Jo...More Info
SYNOPSIS My Trip Down The Pink Carpet is Leslie Jordan s rollicking, faced-paced collection of stories served up with wit, panache, and plenty of biting asides. Filled with overwrought childhood agonies, offbeat observations, and revealing celebrity encounters from Boy George to George Clooney it delivers a fresh, laugh-out-loud take on Hollywood, fame, addiction, gay culture, and learning to love oneself. Recorded during Leslie s live one-man-show in Atlanta, My Trip Down The Pink Carpet shows the singular comedian in rare form as takes material from his book of the same name and brings it to life onstage. With his signature southern drawl and self-deprecating humor, Leslie recounts the trials of being a gay, southern man with aspirations of entering show business. Above all, his story affirms the importance of defining your own success even if you re a man who fell out of the womb and landed smack dab in your mother s high heels!
